College Update

I am SO glad that I chose UNT’s College of Music instead of somewhere else. I actually feel like I belong here. For the first time in my life I’m not the best singer or anywhere close to it. I’m still talented and good at what I do but here there’s so much motivation to be better and to strive for higher goals.

My motto (taken from the Green Brigade Marching Band) is “Just be better”. It’s so true. For musicians, nothing is perfect. Everyone has room to improve. The difference between you and the next musician is one is simply better. Everyone here performs at such a high caliber and has such drive and motivation that you simply can’t pick apart these musicians and figure out why which one is better than other. To an extent you can but after awhile they all start to sound the same. The details, the little details, is what makes a musician special. And that is what all 400 music majors at the College of Music work on the most.

In my 3 months of being here I have made some FANTASTIC friends. I’ve made friends here that I know I can trust with anything and that truly have my back. I love how we all have this love and appreciation for music. We support each other and remind each other everyday that we’re fantastic musicians even though we may not think we are. Now the funny thing here is the majority of my friends play flute in a concert ensemble (not marching band) and they’re gay. I’ve realized that the Metroplex and Denton is a treasure trove of gay guys. I’ve yet to become good friends with a straight guy. I’m perfectly ok with this and I would be friends with them no matter what orientation they relate to. I really do appreciate these guys and I hope the next 4-5 years (who knows, we’re all double majoring) are amazing.

Speaking of double major, the statistics don’t lie about changing majors. I went from just wanting to conduct to wanting to perform and learn the ways of opera. So as of next semester, I will be a double major in choral music education and vocal performance. It’ll be a journey and I really hope I enjoy the path that I’m on.

Last words on the College of Music. I feel like my high school band program didn’t prepare me at all for higher level band. I felt completely behind with the Green Brigade. I had to relearn how to march and play and I had to face pass offs. No more “trust” in knowing your music like in high school. Thankfully I’ve passed all mine. Band here is no joke. It’s hard and it’s rigorous. People drop for the sole reason that it’s too hard. I’m proud of myself for sticking with it and fighting through the challenges. On the other hand, making All State and being in choir for like forever has not only properly prepared me for college choir but it has prepared me very well in aural skills and in music theory. The only thing I was disappointed in in high school was that the things we were doing in class weren’t fully explained. I had no idea we were arppegiating chords every day in choir let alone their functions. But I guess the high school kids wouldn’t understand it or it would be a worthless piece of information.

Anyways I’m loving my experience and I feel the next 4 years are going to be fantastic!

CHRIS, CHRIS, CHRIS!!! By now you should know how much I love you! I’ve been missing you for years now and I really and sincerely hope you get to come to Texas some time soon. I’m so glad that we’ve both grown up into mature adults. The “Inside Joke” will be the greatest inside joke of all time don’t worry ;) We’re seriously brother and sister like we would never work in a dating relationship. I love your sense of humor and your advice. You might not think this but you have the greatest way of advising others and helping people sort through their problems. I love your outlook on life and your simplicity to life. You don’t make things too difficult or too outrageous; you just go with the flow (something I need to work on). I can’t wait to see you again in person and I hope you’re my best man at my wedding (which will mostly likely be to Kyle). Have fun in college! Best wishes to you and Megan :)

T-LASS!!! If you were not gay trust me we’d SO be dating. Like no joke. You were the first new friend I made during high school and truly one of the best. We always have the best times together and I’m going to miss them so much! I love laughing with you and telling you to stop doing stupid things (you know what I mean when I say that like stuff that’s funny that you do but after awhile it’s gets kinda dumb. Either way it’s a good thing, I’ll explain in person haha). Anyways, we’ve shared some deep, dark secrets and been through a LOT during high school. I love your ability to relate to people and your musicianship. I really hope you succeed in everything musical and hopefully transfer to UNT so I’ll have my best friend all the time! LOVE YOU!!!

Lizzy, Lizzy, Lizzy!! Soooo glad we were good friends! I loved how we were such good companions in choir and we always supported each other. I’m still sad that we didn’t get to experience All-State together but I do know had you been there the whole experience would’ve been a bajillion times more fun :) I loved how positive you were and how you always jumped at new and innovative ideas. I love how we had our gossip talks and choir jokes and mass get togethers and adventures. I really hope we stay close friends throughout life and I can’t wait to see you again!!

Dillon, Dillon, Dillon! Boy were you a life changer. First and VERY first guy friend ever. I feel we could’ve had a great dating relationship had junior high not been such an awkward and dumb place. Anyways, our friendship has evolved and changed into soooo many things. We went from constantly talking in person to constantly talking on the phone and then to ALWAYS being at my house. I admit we grew apart when we stopped having classes together but all in all we’re still great friends. I think this last year of high school was our best year yet. We had so many inside jokes and many hidden laughs. I hope we stay the best of friends during college and that you’re at my wedding hopefully with someone else in tow ;)

Zaccy poo, Zac Wacky, Zac de Yak! I think out of all my friendships we’ve had one of the best friendships (if that made sense at all haha). I still remember the first day of 7th grade when I tried to help you open your locker and then ran away. I love that we automatically can talk and laugh and have the best times with each other. We had THE best lunch adventures sophomore and junior year even despite the near-death accidents haha. I think I’ve been a pivotal advice column for your love life which don’t worry will evolve on it’s own no matter how old you are. I see a really bright future with you and I hope we stays friends fo life and that you’re one of my groom’s maids (if that’s what you call them) at my wedding (which will most likely be to Kyle). Have fun at UT and at that hot frat party!

Alex (Jennifer) Lowell! I’m really going to miss this gal (had to say it haha). We’ve been best friends since the 4th grade and I mean BEST friends. We had soooo many sleepovers at my house and her house(s). We shared the greatest moments and the best laughs and were at some point inseparable. And I gotta say, she kept me in check which is always a plus. I’m going to miss her humor, her wisdom, and her opportunistic outlook on life. I’ve always respected Alex’s personal beliefs and personality and sometimes even admired her calm in life’s situations. I really hope that we continue to have an amazing relationship with each other :)

VACATION TIME!

So in this one post I’m going to sum up a 3 day vacation to Arlington. Yeah it’s not that extravagant but it’s still a lot of fun and I LOVE the Metroplex area. I can’t wait to live there! So let’s get started…

Texas Rangers Baseball!! 3 nights in a row and it’s going to be amazing! This is the reason why I’m putting off taking my prescription antibiotics for my acne. A big side effect is increased sensitivity to the sun so taking it and being outside for a long period of time would not good. I might have to switch meds once band starts…

Next is Hurricane Harbor (2nd time this summer). A MUCH needed necessity for this hot weather. Hopefully the lazy river will be cleaner and more swimable than last time. And I’m ready for the INTENSE waves in the wave pool. Totally beats out Castaway Cove. I think everything beats out Castaway Cove…

And then lastly (and hopefully if my family will give into it), we may hit up the Parks at Arlington Mall! I love this mall so much and I’m really looking forward to hitting up Forever 21 and stocking up on tops and possibly some closed toed shoes. I’ll try to shy away from make-up as I feel I’m pretty much covered there and I HATE make-up counters. I don’t like the pushiness of them and the women always piss me off. I might indulge in Clinique ‘cause I love their skincare products. I have a few others places I want to hit up like Icing by Claires, Charlotte Russe, Fossil (maybe haha), Macy’s, and much more. I personally feel like I’ve been shopping too much. Uggh guilty pleasure. Anyways, I’ll be back Monday!

Is you ok?

It’s too hot in Texas or at least in Wichita Falls. I mean damn 40 days of 100 degree weather is ridic if you ask me. I don’t think there’s been a day this summer where I haven’t broken out in a sweat. All I can say is I’m ready for fall/winter but more looking forward to winter. I’d rather be cold then be hot, sweaty, and stinky.

On an ending note…TOMORROW I’LL BE ON VACATION!!! :)
